Anything which is invisible will not be noticed. What cannot be noticed cannot be tracked or measured. Time is an invisible resource. You will not notice its passing. It will slip through your fingers like fine sand! You will start the day with a full supply of this resource, but end up with the universal excuse ‘no time’!

To track your time, set a time frame for every activity and stick to it. ‘Time frame’ means fixing a start time and end time. For example: reading newspaper from 6.30 to 7.00 a.m.; telephoning colleague from .... to .... By doing this you will fall into a time discipline. It’s not about becoming a ‘time nut’, but about becoming disciplined.

Today procure a timer. It could even be your mobile phone. Or buy one from a sports shop. Next time when you have to start an event such as a meeting, fix the start time and end time and stick to it. You can have a buffer, but stick to it. Follow this for a week and notice what happens to your time consciousness!

3 / 365 Don’t Do What Need Not Be Done!

I’m sure you have started logging your activities in a day. The contents of the activity logging will give you a lot of information. But we have to analyse the data from the voluminous information. For example, you should audit the quality of your day by asking such questions as: Did I do justice for the day? Could I have been even more productive?

By doing this you will get a ‘not-to-do-list’. We know what a ‘to-do list’ is. A not-to-do-list is a list of unnecessary activities, which ate into your time without adding any quality into your day. This is something like the role of an editor of a magazine or a movie,   who cuts and removes such portion which is not required.

Tonight before going to sleep, you should list at least five activities which you should not have done.  Remove them from your tomorrow’s to-do list!

2/365Track Where Your Time Goes

Do you complain ‘I have no time’?   If so, you are lying! Isn’t it true that all of us have the same amount of time, irrespective of any social differences? So, it is not true that you do not have time. May be, you do not know where your time is going. Any valuable resource should be handled and invested carefully. Time is the most valuable of all the resources. You should know where and how you spend your time.

Do an exercise for the next ten days. Record all the activities that you do every 30 minutes from the time you get up till you go to sleep in a time logging sheet. Do this exercise very sincerely and honestly for ten days. You don’t have to show this to anyone.

At the end of ten days, study and critically evaluate, whether you spend your time intelligently or not. Identify unnecessary activities; those, which you could have postponed or you could have delegated; those on which you could have spent less time, etc. You will hit a treasure chest!

Do this logging from today!

1.      Daily Discipline

The secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine.

In a long journey, every step is important. This principle is very much true in our life that every day is important. For each day, we should have a specific outcome in mind. The best way to do this is to have a to-do list. We should have not more than three to five carefully selected activities listed for the day. Too many things in the to-do list will frighten us; too few things will make the day not busy enough. You can have specific categories of things to do. For example: to do things; to telephone people; to send e-mails; to send sms to people, etc.

It’s not merely having a to-do list. What is even more important is executing what is planned for the day. At the end of the day, we should not go to sleep unless we have done all that we have listed for the day. Do it for 21 days continuously and this practice will become a habit. That is why I recommend that you have not more than three to five easy to do things to start with.

Do this to day!

Spending is easy, but not earning!

Spending is made easy, and earning is made very difficult!

Just think how we are made to spend money easily. There was a time when we had to go out to spend money. At least to avoid going out, we would not have spent! Now, with your credit card, net baking and internet, it is very easy to spend from where you are, how you are - whether you are lying down or sitting up! The credit card software is made so easy that you don't have to ask for 'one time password', and the moment you enter your registered mobile number, your account is debited and you get an sms that an amount has been spent form your credit card!

But earning is becoming more and more difficult. You have to work hard, learn new skill, compete with others, strain your every nerve and sweat it out to earn! Our fathers and grand fathers earned with much lesser effort and we are working very hard to earn even half as much as they earned.

So, spend less, decide what you want and why you want it. Ask the question: what will happen if I don't buy this thing? If the answer is nothing, don't buy it!

Enjoy what your children do!

You should enjoy what your children do. They may be adamant and obstinate. Enjoy. Don't get irritated. They love you and adore you. Spend more time with your children.
You can always download a missed TV programme, but you cannot store and download your child's daily activities!

Do you respect others’ sentiments?

We live in a society of mutual expectations. We expect something from others in as much as others also have expectations from us. There is one thing which we all expect from others and that is respecting our sentiments.
The other day I was in a house where the head of the family is past 90 years. He retired long ago from a private job and has no savings or pension. He is totally dependent on his three sons and they live in a joint family. He likes patronizing cows as part of his religious sentiments. He has two cows which are very old and they don't yield anymore milk and it is really very costly to maintain them.
Still the sons and the daughters in law do not say anything about this costly sentiments of the old man. Not that they are rich and in fact they belong to the middle class and with their very ordinary income they maintain the family.
They value their father's sentiments more than their hard earned money!
Over this weekend check if you also share this valuable trait!
